Can Raga close the gap in Andorra?

Following Adam Raga’s (Gas Gas) victory in Italy last weekend the sixth round of the 2009 SPEA FIM Trial World Championship beckons with renewed importance. Toni Bou’s (Repsol Montesa HRC) run of six straight wins prior to his defeat at the last GP made some think that his name was already engraved on the World championship trophy. The leading Spanish duo will make the short trip to the principality of Andorra with them both knowing how decisive it is for them to win this final round before the traditional summer break in the series. If Raga can close the gap further on Bou then the Montesa teamster will perhaps not enjoy the holiday period as much as he had hoped. In contrast another win for the defending champion in La Rabassa would all but seal his third successive outdoor title with just two rounds remaining after this weekend’s latest clash. The battle behind the leaders is as equally fierce with just seven points separating Takahisa Fujinami (Repsol Montesa HRC), Albert Cabestany (Sherco) and Dougie Lampkin (Beta) in third, fourth and fifth places respectively. Jeroni Fajardo (Beta) is just one rider who will be hoping that more familiar territory will bring him some better form as the current World number four finds himself fighting for sixth spot in the overall standings after a mixed run of results. Sitting a mere seven points behind Fajardo, James Dabill (Gas Gas) has a similar story to tell and will be looking for a top five finish at the Grand Prix of Andorra to get his season back on track. Whilst we will have to wait until September to discover who will be crowned King of the World Pro class, it is more than likely that the top positions in both the Junior and Youth categories will be decided this weekend. Alexz Wigg (Beta) and Jonathan Richardson (Sherco) only need to record top ten finishes to secure their respective titles, with both championships using the best nine from eleven counting days to determine the eventual winners. If the young British pairing are successful in reaching their goals this Sunday, both will move up a class for the final two events in Spain and France.

The 2009 FIM Women’s Trial World Championship kicks off in Andorra today before the men’s main event.
